The Aging Athlete - "Running" out the door

I am now officially into week 3 of training for the Marine Corps Marathon. I will tell you, it is so lovely to have someone else in charge of my training, I just check my Training Peaks calendar, and it lets me know what I have on tap for that day.

First Lesson:

Don’t just run out the door

Coach Chris asks for a warm-up before I start my run. It is a 10 minute walking warm-up with arms pumping as if I am running. Kind of a time suck, eh? Let me tell you, prioritizing a warm-up is a game-changer!

Even before working with Chris, I had been doing a 15-25 minute morning mobility routine. I started 3 years ago after a bad episode of sciatica. Over time I have made little changes based on how my body feels.

But to be clear, I do this every day.

I’ve got only 45 minutes to run!

I understand this conundrum. My answer?

Shorten the run time

Get some sort of warm-up in

Taking those 5-10 minutes is a small investment in time that pays off when you don’t suffer an injury that keeps you off the road or out of the gym for 3 months.

In case you are interested - this… and also this… are part of my morning routine.
